Contains spoilers for the first couple chapters of Sleepless Domain.

Undine grew up with a gentle disposition. She never liked being in the spotlight, instead playing support to others. She let other people talk over her, tried to smooth over conflict rather than stand up for anything, and generally just rolled with whatever life threw her way rather than pushing back. Then, all of her friends died around her.

Wait, context! Undine was the magical girl Alchemical Water, charged with patrolling The City at night to keep it safe from invading monsters. As the team's support caster, she generally hung back to help people with team attacks and let Alchemical Aether get off all the cool finishing attacks. On the one night that Aether didn't show, an absurdly powerful monster ambushed the team and killed three of its members, Undine only surviving because Aether sacrificed her powers to heal her would-be fatal injuries. It's the kind of experience that would leave anyone with a sense of guilt, and she got hit with it hard.

Undine wouldn't say it as such, but on some level, she absolutely blames herself for her team's deaths. She responds to the trauma she suffered by moving nonstop - get stronger, patrol every night, kill as many monsters as possible. As long as she keeps doing something, keeps pushing herself and distracting herself, then she doesn't have time to grieve. If she ever starts to slow down, then the weight of her emotions catches up with her, and she actually has to confront what happened. So, she keeps swimming, so that shes doesn't have to drown.

The trauma of that night didn't fundamentally change who Undine is. She's still kind, slightly awkward, and prone to letting other people talk over her without saying anything. However, whenever anything threatens to remind her of her recent past, she locks up, suppressing most of her emotions in favor of a superficial protecting layer of anger and bitterness. The jarring back-and-forth in attitude can make her come off as a bit odd, if you don't know what happened to her.

Going on patrol in a city where all the buildings are plastered with strange barriers. Killing stranger monsters. You weren't alone, though; four magical girls were fighting alonside you - the hot-headed Alchemical Fire, the super chill Alchemical Earth, the quasi-celebrity Alchemical Air, and the absurdly overpowered Alchemical Aether.

From Five to One (Memory)
SPOILER - After some drama, your combat team's leader agreed to sit out a patrol and give the rest of you a chance to prove that you can handle yourselves without her help. Unfortunately, that night coincided with the appearance of the most powerful monster you'd ever seen. The others all died. You only survived because your leader came back, and sacrificed all of her powers to save your life. Team Alchemical went from five members to one overnight.

The Purple Entity (Memory)
While wandering dark city streets, you were stalked by a nameless purple creature, looking almost but not quite like a human being. It seemed to loathe you and delight in your suffering, for reasons you couldn't understand. Reference.

Better than Fighting Alone (Memory)
While fighting an endless sequence of bizarre monsters on your own, you ran across a powerful and cheerful magical girl named Heartful Punch. The two of you joined forces temporarily, fighting side by side for the rest of the night. It was nice.

Team Hunt (Memory)
Wandering around at night, talking to various magical girl teams and trying to find one that's looking for an extra member. In the end, you struck out.

Alchemical Water Transformation (Ability)
The ability to transform, gaining improved physical strength and a cute outfit. Transformation sequence reference.

Water Control (Ability)
The ability to conjure water, and then manipulate it freely. Shoot rays of water, trap things in crushing bubbles of pressured water, skate along the ground on a thin layer of water.

Moisture Radar (Ability)
The ability to scope out the landscape and position of moving objects in a wide radius around you. Only works when the humidity is high enough, though, so it's not very reliable.
